PURPOSE

We study human bone as a living organ — one that forms blood, regulates immunity, and becomes a sanctuary for cancer. Our purpose is to decode its organisation and turn that knowledge into better therapies.

Who we are

Bone Organ — Modeling & Regeneration is a research group at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine, the Lund Stem Cell Center, and the Lund University Cancer Centre. We combine stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and bone marrow immunology to investigate bone as an integrated organ system — bridging fundamental discovery and clinical translation.

Mission

To decode the molecular and cellular programs that build, sustain, and alter the human bone organ — and to engineer innovative strategies for its repair and reprogramming. We pursue this ambition through human-specific experimental models, from single-cell atlases of bone marrow stem cells to patient-derived disease systems and off-the-shelf bone grafts.

Bone is a living organ with a logic we are only beginning to understand

Bone is far more than a structural scaffold. It is a living organ: housing the body's principal blood-forming centre, actively shaping immune responses, and providing a fertile ground for cancer progression. Understanding how this organ forms, functions, and fails requires integrating knowledge across scales: from the molecular identity of its constituent stem cells, to the architecture of the tissues they build, to the immunological dialogues that unfold within them.

ERC Consolidator Grant — ImmunhOss

After receiving both the ERC Proof-of-Concept and the Swedish Research Council grants, we end 2025 on a very high note, with Paul also being granted the ERC Consolidator for his project 'ImmunhOss'. And what better way to celebrate this important milestone for the entire lab than a champagne shower!

DENOVOSS Consortium EIC Transition Grant

The DENOVOSS Consortium has been granted an EIC Transition grant! In this project, four partners are working together to bring fully engineered but decellularized human cartilage up to clinical standards: Lund University, Dhalion Biotech, Nantes University, and Basel University. We are particularly excited to see Dhalion Biotech significantly extending its portfolio, with the aim to deliver OssiGel as a brand-new class of biomaterial for bone repair.

Laura presented her work during the WCMM Friday Club. She introduced her project on the role of the human bone marrow niche in dendritic cell regulation and its implications for AML immunotherapy. Good job Laura!

UniStem Day 2026 Workshop

On March 20th, Camille, Sara and Elia organized a workshop as part of UniStem Day 2026. The objective was to teach high school students how to inject the microfluidic platforms used in the lab. The three groups of students showed high interest in the activity, and they all did a great job!

Elia's Presentation at WCMM Research Day 2026

Elia gave a presentation of his joint work with Camille on the bone marrow-on-a-chip developed for the BuonMarrow Consortium project during the WCMM Research Day 2026. Sara also contributed to the organization of this successful event!

Science to School 2026 — Filbornaskolan

Sara and Laura took part in Science to School 2026, meeting pupils at Filbornaskolan in Helsingborg. They first introduced stem cells to them and tested what they learnt with a quiz. They also discussed about their own journey in science and what they are doing in their current projects. Lastly, the pupils could handle some cell culture lab material, and they could even try to inject some microfluidic chips!

In the beautiful Palma de Mallorca, Paul and Camille had the chance to present the diverse projects carried out in the lab during the TERMIS-EU meeting. This was also an opportunity to meet the BuonMarrow Pathfinder team, which we will very soon host in Lund for the Consortium annual meeting!

Welcome Patricia!

Patricia recently joined the lab. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Biomedicine at Lund University and has a background in Biochemistry from the University of Seville. During her internship in the lab, she will study the immunomodulatory role of the bone marrow mesenchymal niche in acute myeloid leukemia and how it shapes the response to a novel dendritic cell-based immunotherapy. Welcome Patricia!
